It is something I got from Ana Chumachenco, but also from Ivry, who used to also rest his violin on something, because that is a way to relax the arm and the vibrato. For the right hand,it is also really good to have the feeling that you are really resting it on something, because then the shoulder doesn't go up.It's very good for the sound. And some times even for delicate places.
"Like in Mozart, where you have a lot of spiccato, it's very helpful to play it when you are lying down. When you lie down, the gravity is completely different . if you are not careful.the bow falls on your face! You have to control your bow hand very carefully to get the same sound out of it .Then when you stand up afterwards, everything is so easy and so much more relaxed.
